On a remote island lives Prospero, once Duke of Milan. Years earlier, he had been overthrown in an intrigue devised by his brother Antonio and set adrift on the open sea in a fragile boat. As if by miracle, he and his daughter Miranda survived and reached this island. Here, Prospero has built a new world and rules unchallenged over its creatures and spirits, among them Caliban and the spirit Ariel, the island’s original inhabitants. One day, Prospero sights the fleet of King Alonso of Naples, on board of which are also his brother Antonio and the king’s son, Ferdinand. With Ariel’s help, he unleashes a storm that causes the ships to capsize and their passengers to wash ashore. Through this carefully staged shipwreck, Prospero finds himself once again in a position of power, faced with the possibility of belated revenge or reconciliation, as he begins to draw together the threads of destiny.
