In South Africa, funerals are often a weeklong celebration. Days before the actual ceremony, the family gathers to share stories of the deceased and eat, sing and play. Together, the mourners experience the whole range of human emotion: from deep grief to pure joy. The concert titled “Between heaven and earth” interweaves bittersweet South African funeral songs with original parts of Mozart’s Requiem. The programme encourages us to carve out more time for what is important to us.
