The opera Armida transports us into a world of astonishing sorcery and passionate emotional conflict. How does a young woman respond when her beloved seeks to impress her with fantasies of heroism? And when she herself is promised as a reward to the victor of an impending battle? To this dizzying interplay of war and deception, Armida opposes love and truth—wielding magical powers to do so. She compels the self-assured warriors to question their dreams of masculine heroism. Yet ultimately, she too begins to doubt the role assigned to her: that of the seductive enchantress.
